Pupils make waves with sailing expedition

A group of HSD pupils and staff have been making waves over the summer holidays by embarking on the School’s first-ever sailing expedition!

Pupils make waves with sailing expedition

10 F2 and F3 pupils, joined by Mr Ross and Miss Geatons, jumped on board Ocean Youth Trust’s yacht Alba Venturer, for a week-long maritime adventure in the Hebrides.

Departing from Oban, it was all hands on deck as the group members embraced an array of exciting challenges and opportunities which came their way, as participant Nellie Luxford describes:

“On the deck of the Alba Venturer, students gained confidence on sailing terms, knots, and processes as the week progressed, journeying us through the Hebrides from Rum to Tiree to Mull (and beyond).

“Below deck, pupils focussed on team-building with their watch groups, meal preparation and socialising with each other and the six crew members on board.

“There were many memorable moments immersed in this trip, including coming face to face with dolphins, walking in the Treshnish Isles, wild swimming and playing lots of games on our final evening together.

“We would like to thank the Ocean Youth Trust for such a fulfilling adventure that has had so many outcomes. It was really an outstanding opportunity.”

Outdoor Activities Co-Ordinator Gordon Ross, added, “I was delighted with the experience the young people gained. One like no other.

“It was a great adventure within a close team and one which will be invaluable to the pupils’ own personal development.”
