High School of Dundee pupils have enjoyed a long history of scoring some of the best results in Scotland in SQA examinations.
Our pupils consistently score well above national averages in SQA examinations and the School has featured in the top ten list of Scottish schools by results for a number of years.
In 2019, one of our pupils achieved the highest, or joint highest, marks in the country in 5 separate National 5 exams, while in 2018, High School of Dundee pupils scored the best, or joint best, marks in Scotland in 3 different SQA subjects. What's more, in 2017 one of our pupils was recognised as Scotland’s top performer in the 2017 SQA exams after winning the SQA’s Academic Excellence award. And since 2013, High School of Dundee pupils have scored the top, or joint top, marks in Scotland in Higher or Advanced Higher exams 17 times.

In addition, in the last four years alone, in National 5 exams, 100% grades – and therefore best, or joint best, marks in the country - have been achieved 23 times, in subjects including French, Spanish, Geography, Maths and Economics.
An impressive record of achievement
In 2019, pupils in F6 (S6) secured a record average of 1.9 Advanced Highers each, with a pass rate of 91.8%. More than a quarter (27.5%) achieved at least two A grades at Advanced Higher.
F5 (S5) pupils meanwhile achieved an average of 4.2 Higher passes each, with 57% of Higher passes graded A. The Higher pass rate was 94.3% and a quarter of the year group secured a set of at least 5 A grades. 56.1% of the cohort gained five or more Higher passes.
The Fourth Years also performed strongly in the National 5 exams, securing an average of 7.2 passes each. The pass rate was 94.4%, 67% of which were A grades, and more than a quarter (27.2%) of the year group achieved at least 8 A grades each, and 95% achieved 5 or more N5 passes. One of our pupils recorded the top, or joint top, mark in Scotland in five separate N5 subjects, while 3 others shared that distinction in Maths, and another in Mandarin.
A number of subject departments recorded 100% pass rates at all SQA exam levels while in the case of the Sciences, taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics together at N5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels, the pass rate was a remarkable 97%, with 66% passed at A grade. In addition, all 9 pupils to apply for places on medical courses this year were successful, an outstanding achievement as nationally the overriding majority of such applications are unsuccessful.
This year our F5 (S5) pupils secured a record average of 4.5 Higher passes each, with 61% of Higher passes achieved at A grade. 28.1% of the year group achieved 5 A grades at Higher and the overall Higher pass rate was another record; 96.8%. One of our pupils achieved at least the joint top mark in the country in Higher Maths, courtesy of a perfect score of 100%.
The F6 (S6) year group also performed well, with an Advanced Higher pass rate of 93.3%, with 51% gained at A grade. One of our pupils scored 100% in Advanced Higher Maths, therefore achieving at least the joint top mark in Scotland. In addition, five pupils achieved 4 A grades at Advanced Higher and 17.3% of the cohort secured at least 3 A grades at Advanced Higher.
The Fourth Years performed very well in National 5 exams, securing an average of 7.2 N5 passes each. The pass rate was 95.3%, 66% of which were A grades, and more than a quarter of the year group (27.1%) achieved at least 8 A grades each. One of our pupils achieved full marks in N5 French, thereby securing at least the joint top mark in the country.
One of our pupils, Elle Wyatt, was recognised as Scotland’s top performer in the 2017 SQA exams after winning the SQA’s Academic Excellence award. In addition, High School of Dundee pupils scored the top, or joint top marks in three separate Advanced Higher subjects: Maths, Physics and Chemistry. In Physics two of our pupils shared the top mark! High School of Dundee pupils also achieved the joint top marks in three N5 subjects: Maths, French and Italian.
Across the board in 2017 an incredible 84 exams were passed with scores of 95% or more. Achievements such as these translated into remarkable success for our UCAS applicants, with every pupil who applied for a university place receiving at least one offer, including all 15 of our medical applicants.
In 2016, our Higher results were again the best in Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire. Our pupils also recorded the top marks in Scotland in six subjects and scored 100% not once, but five times. One pupil achieved a unique scientific double by scoring the best marks in the land in both Higher Biology and Higher Chemistry, while another achieved the top mark in Advanced Higher Modern Studies.
In 2015, our Higher results were the best in Dundee, Angus and Fife, with our F5 candidates achieving a pass rate of 95%. At Advanced Higher level, our Sixth Year pupils achieved a pass rate of 91%, with nearly half (48%) at A grade.
