Careers and Beyond School

Preparing our pupils for life and learning beyond the High School is core to our mission.

DataFest 2018

We aim to foster resilience and self-awareness by developing intellectual curiosity that will last a lifetime. But we recognise that the decisions our pupils make about their post-school futures are crucial, so we make sure that they have all the support and advice they need.

Careers Guidance

The School has a Head of Careers Guidance whose role is to co-ordinate resources and be responsive to the changing aspirations of our pupils within a global working environment. We take an individual approach and at all subject preference points (Forms 2, 4 and 5), our pupils have personal appointments with their Guidance Teacher, who will help to advise them. This ensures that our pupils are able to make fully informed decisions at each stage of the process.

The School is also an ‘Inspiring Futures’ School and this allows us to provide bespoke, tailored careers advice. Our pupils start with the Careers Investigator programme in Form 2, and can take advantage of Futurewise profiling in Forms 4 and 5. This allows them to benefit from a 1:1 discussion with a Careers Advisor and a follow-up online report. In addition, personal membership packages enable them to access a range of Careers Guidance opportunities until the age of 23. All aspects of this programme are made fully available to parents and the School to ensure that our young people are supported in the best way.

Beyond school

Supporting our pupils beyond school is a top priority. Whilst the majority of our pupils choose to pursue a course at university, a number choose college courses, apprenticeships or paid employment.

Increasingly our young people are opting to take some time after school to consider a range of options open to them. Several spend time volunteering at home and/or abroad, frequently combining this with travel. On their return they speak unanimously about the power and impact of these experiences and almost all then proceed onto further education.

We are delighted to support our pupils and former pupils through both the UCAS application process, and a number of other portals in the UK and across the globe. All pupils are allocated a Tutor who has responsibility for supporting the application process. All High School of Dundee references are issued in the name of the Rector and are rigorously quality-assured.

We are particularly proud to also be able to support our former pupils in their continuing career paths, often several years after they have left school. In addition, it is hugely gratifying that we are able to benefit from the input of our former pupils in advising and developing our current pupils through talks, work experience and internships.
