In honour of the arrival of the Year of the Pig, this morning pupils in F1 and F2 were treated to a special assembly in which class L5J spread wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year by singing the popular Chinese song Gōng xǐ gōng xǐ.

Hosted by pupils Zahra Taylor and Esther Douglas (both F2), the event also saw Finlay De Vale (also F3) perform Scotland my Homeland, in Mandarin, before one of the leading Chinese calligraphy and brush painting artists in the UK, Chi Zhang, was welcomed onstage to give a captivating demonstration of his work.

Throughout the school, pupils also had the chance to sample authentic Chinese cuisine at lunchtime.

Mandarin teacher Yunchao Murdoch, who organised the assembly, said, “I hope the pupils enjoyed finding out a bit more about Chinese culture at this special time in the year. Many thanks to L5 class teacher Mr Joss, and to the Drama department for providing the beautiful costumes.”
