Helen was born in Falkirk 01/01/1947 the youngest of a family of 4 with 3 older brothers, Ronald, Gordon, Alastair who all attended DHS.
The family moved to Dundee in 1949 when her father was appointed Town Clerk of Dundee. She
attended Grove Primary briefly, then in 1953 went to DHS till 1964 and left after 5th year to do a Higher English.
Helen excelled at sport, notably tennis and hockey and went on to play tennis at Junior Wimbledon and attained an under 23 Cap and also 4 B Caps for the Scottish Ladies National Hockey team.
She attended Dunfermline College of PE 1965-68. Returning to Dundee, she taught PE at Morgan Academy. She was a stalwart of DHS Ladies Hockey Club, playing centre forward and was a very active member of Forfar Golf Club.
In 1971 she went to Adelaide to teach PE for 3 years. In 1974 she returned and joined the PE Dept of DHS. Missing the sun she returned to Australia in 1976 and taught in Salisbury for a couple of years then returning to Scotland she taught PE at Trinity Academy Edinburgh.
Rejoining the staff of DHS in 1981 as Assistant Principal Teacher of PE she remained there, a popular and much respected colleague, till 1990. Helen was in charge of the senior hockey and tennis teams passing on her knowledge and love of these sports. She was very knowledgeable, firm, fair and enthusiastic. Annual Easter and New Year Ski trips and hockey tours were part of her co-curricular contributions to the wider life of school, giving large numbers of pupils the opportunity to visit different countries as well as improving their skills. Form 5 girls also benefitted from her advice in the days
before specialised guidance.
The PE offices in those days were tiny situated up the stairs from the large gym. The department was an extremely happy one and her colleagues Sandy Hutchison, Graeme Spowart and Mif Sim remember her fondly and the good times they shared both in and outside work. Christmas nights out were legendary as were staff golf outings, especially one, when to her surprise she was given left handed clubs!
Helen moved to Glasgow in 1990 and married Colin Robertson (who sadly predeceased her in June 2025) in November 1990. She taught at Jordanhill School for a short time, where a colleague remembered her as a dedicated teacher and valued colleague. Dot Dobson classes for the over 60s were run by her with much enthusiasm for a number of years, Dot had also previously taught at the school. She became an integral part of the Robertson clan and also of Douglas Park Golf Club where she was a past Captain and winner of multiple cups and prizes.
Helen died in Glasgow on 23rd November 2025 after a short illness. She leaves behind her surviving brother, Alastair, in South Africa in addition to her step family in Glasgow and her many friends both in Glasgow and Dundee.
