Bursary & Financial Support

Help with fees

It is our intention that a High School of Dundee education should be available to any pupil who would benefit from it, regardless of their financial circumstances.  Financial assistance is therefore provided to support those pupils who without that help may otherwise be unable to attend.

Bursary awards vary according to the level of family income and are reviewed annually. As a guideline, should your gross household income be in excess of £80,000 you are unlikely to receive financial support.

Support ranges from 10% to 100% of your tuition fees and a typical level of award is between 20% to 60% of the tuition fee. The majority of bursary awards are made to pupils in Senior Years with limited Junior awards available for pupils joining L6 and L7.

Each year we receive a considerable number of applications for financial support but there are limited funds available. Late applications may considered if funds are not already exhausted.

‘My daughter has done nothing but thrive since she came to the school and has grown into a very capable young lady. What more could parents ask for?!’

Prospective parents who would like to be considered for Bursary Support for their child for entry in August 2027, must first complete our online Junior & Senior Years Application Form no later than 31st October 2026. We will then invite your child to come along to one of our entrance assessment visits, which take place from the last week in October to mid November.

How do I know if my child is eligible for a bursary?

In general, bursaries are awarded to families with a gross annual household income of £80,000 or less.

How do I apply for a bursary?

In the first instance, you will need to complete our Junior & Senior Years Application Form here, tick the Bursary box on the form and pay the £120 registration fee. You will also be asked to attach a copy of your child’s birth certificate / passport page and send a copy of your child’s latest school report to Admissions.

Your child will then be asked to complete the entrance assessment before mid- November. If successful, we will then ask you to complete a detailed Bursary Application form about your financial circumstances. This information, together with your child’s entrance assessment, will be presented to the School’s Awards Committee to determine if an award can be made.

What is a typical bursary award and how long does it last?

Depending on your child’s entrance assessment result and your financial circumstances, you could be eligible for up to 100% towards tuition fees and provided your circumstances remain unchanged it could last as long as your child remains at the school.  Bursary awards can range from 10% upwards with the average award this session being 62% towards tuition fees.

What happens if we are unsuccessful in securing a bursary award this year?

We would recommend having a chat with the Admissions Team before re-applying. You are welcome to submit an application in subsequent years, provided you complete a fresh Junior & Senior Years Application Form and pay the Registration Fee again. The assessment process will be the same.

What information will I be asked to submit for the detailed Bursary Application?

If your child performs strongly in the entrance assessment you will be asked to submit a detailed Bursary Application Form.

This form will ask about joint household income and outgoings to provide a detailed picture of your joint financial circumstances as a family.  It will include documents such as your most recent payslips, P60, Council Tax bill, mortgage statements, rental agreements, contents insurance, most recent tax return, the last 3 months statements for all bank, building society, investment accounts, all credit cards and loans, most recent investment and share portfolio valuation(s), any court orders, legal separation documents and any other information that may be relevant to determining your financial circumstances.

As bursaries are awarded based on your child’s academic ability together with your financial means, your child must perform highly in the entrance assessment to be put forward for consideration for an award of financial support. Shortly after your child’s assessment we will advise you of their results and you may then be sent a Bursary Application Form to complete.

If your child performs well but does not qualify for financial support, you may still be offered a full fee-paying place at our school.  Please refer to our Bursaries Q & A above for more information.

Current High School of Dundee parents who have experienced a change in financial circumstances, and would like to apply for a new, or a top-up of an existing award of financial support, must apply through the usual process and obtain an application form from the Chief Operating Officer, at [email protected]

Family Remissions - 3 children or more

It is recognised that having three or more children at the school involves a significant financial commitment. A remission of a proportion of the fees will therefore be granted to families who have three or more children attending the School at any one time. In addition, where three or more children attend at any one time, families may apply for a discretionary remission.
