Born in June 1934, David attended the High School of Dundee from 1940 until 1952. Throughout his time at the school, he took part in many activities including the CCF, Rifle Club, the Literary Society as well as being a part of the Rugby Team.
Upon leaving the school, David went on to study Law at the University of Dundee, graduating from the same in 1955. A year later, he was conscripted into the Army Legal Corps and was sent to Hong Kong and Singapore via Karachi and Calcutta.
After being discharged from military service, David returned to Dundee and joined the family firm of DJ & A Tweedie, which was based in Murraygate. Come 1958, he celebrated a personal milestone by marrying his partner, Avril Donaldson.
The firm of DJ & A Tweedie merged with Shield and Kyd in 1971. David was a Managing Partner until his retirement in 1996. By 2012, the company had also merged with Lindsays.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, David began lecturing students at the University of Dundee on Company Law. In addition to this, he was also President of Dundee Round Table and between 1986/87 he was President of Dundee Rotary Club.
Between 1978 and 1994, David was Clerk to the Bonnet Maker Craft of the Nine Incorporated Trades. He was also a long-standing member of Dundee Angling Club and an Elder and Treasurer of Longforgan Parish Church.
Sadly, his wife Avril died in February 2017, and it was later that same year that David suffered a stroke. With his health deteriorating, David passed away peacefully at Strachan House Care Home in Edinburgh on Monday 15th April 2019 surrounded by his family.
David is survived by son, Peter, who is also a former pupil of the school, and his wife Carole as well as grandsons James and William. Peter described his father as ‘a gentleman lawyer who always made time for colleagues, fellow professionals and of course, his clients’. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
