Welcome to the High School of Dundee

Nurturing and inspiring your child to thrive in the real world.

It is an enormous privilege to serve as Executive Rector of the High School of Dundee – a remarkable school with a proud history, a strong sense of community and an exciting future.

For almost 800 years, HSD has been part of the fabric of Dundee. That extraordinary heritage matters deeply to us, but we are equally ambitious about what comes next.

My aspiration is for HSD to be a school that is confident in its traditions while constantly looking forward: innovative, outward-facing and determined to provide an exceptional education for every young person who walks through our doors.

At the heart of that education are our pupils.

We want them to achieve highly, of course, but education is about so much more than examination results. It is about discovering passions, developing confidence, building character, learning from mistakes and having the courage to pursue opportunities that might initially seem beyond reach.

Our responsibility is therefore not simply to prepare young people for the next examination, or even the next stage of their education. It is to prepare them for life. That means providing extraordinary opportunities – in the classroom, on the sports field, through music and the performing arts, through leadership and service, and through our relationships with the city and communities around us. We want every pupil to discover something at HSD that makes them think, this is where I belong, and this is where I can flourish.

None of this happens without exceptional people. Our staff are the greatest asset of HSD, and I want our school to be characterised by kindness, collaboration, ambition and mutual respect. The same is true of our relationship with parents. The strongest schools are genuine communities in which pupils, families and colleagues work together in pursuit of something greater than any one of us could achieve alone.

I also want HSD to look confidently beyond its walls. Dundee is an extraordinary city of innovation, creativity, science, culture and enterprise, and our school should both contribute to and learn from the community of which we are so proud to be a part.

There will always be things we can do better. That is part of being an ambitious school. We will listen, learn, innovate and continually ask ourselves a simple question: how can we make the experience of our pupils even better?

I hope you will come and experience HSD for yourself. Walk through our school, meet our pupils and colleagues, and discover the warmth, energy and ambition of this very special community.

Our history is extraordinary. I believe our future can be even more so.
