Former HSD pupil Dr Frederick (Fred) Alexander Sieber, died suddenly but peacefully on April 10, 2024, at the Critical Care Unit of the Royal Stoke University Hospital at the age of 65.
Born on the October 13, 1958, Fred attended the High School of Dundee between 1970 and 1977. He was a good “all rounder” representing Airlie House and the School at rugby, athletics and shooting.
Fred also enjoyed acting and singing in the chorus of the annual production of Gilbert and Sullivan, playing chess and bridge, and gaining a silver ballroom dancing medal!
He joined the CCF and loved playing in the Pipe Band, performing at events and taking part in competitions. In 1975, he won the Scottish Schools CCF Pipe Band Championships against stiff competition.
Excellence in maths and science led to Fred studying medicine at the University of Dundee, where he graduated with an MBChB. He remeained in Dundee after gaining his qualifications, working at Ninewells, Dundee Royal Infirmary, and Kings Cross while living in Broughty Ferry. He later switched career and began training to become a GP under Dr Kenneth Hogg.
In 1983, Fred married his HSD classmate Heather Johnston, who taught at the School before the birth of the couple’s first child, Clare, in 1986. Two years later, the couple had a son, who they named Alex.
That same year, the family moved down to Newcastle-under-Lyme after Fred secured a GP job in Stoke-on-Trent. He also worked at practices in Tunstall and Shelton before taking early retirement in 2013.
Dr Sieber is survived by his wife Heather, their two children Clare and Alex, their four grandchildren Lyra, Francesca, Brooke, and Remy, and his sister Dorothy.
