Playground Project

Enhancing our playground

An iconic space

Our playground is an iconic feature of our school. Generations of HSD pupils have grown up playing and socialising in this distinctive space, with the wonderful vista down Reform Street to the Caird Hall connecting HSD to the heart of the city centre.

An inspiration for the creation of the Bash Street Kids, a gathering place for our annual Remembrance Parade and the City’s Torchlight procession…
Our playground is a special place, but we want to make it even better.

We are excited to launch the first phase of an initiative that aims to transform the space. Donate now and help us bring our vision to life.

Gift Aid

I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that if I pay less income tax in the current tax year than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of my donations it is my responsibility to pay any difference. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give or have given in the last four tax years.

What do we want to do?

Our goal is to maintain the character of the HSD playground which many remember so fondly, whilst enhancing it to make it a more modern, vibrant and functional space for current pupils, future pupils and the HSD community.

What are the plans?

A project group, led by Alan Patterson (SLT) and Pete Grewar (Board), and featuring staff, parents, and Architect, Jon Frullani, has been working hard carefully creating plans for a playground that will better serve our community.

We are now ready to launch Phase 1. It will focus on upgrading the West side of the playground, closest to the Margaret Harris Building. This phase is set to be completed by the start of Session 2025-26, pending planning permission approval.

This first phase includes:

Surface Upgrade: an area of the playground will feature a new, “knee-friendly” wet pour surface, giving our younger pupils a more friendly surface on which to play.

New Equipment: a variety of exciting playground equipment, (including an amphitheatre) will be installed, sparking creativity and outdoor play.

Greening the Space: we plan to plant a hedge along the perimeter of the playground, bringing greenery to the space.

How can you help?

We are working with a number of supporters of the School to help fund this initiative, but we really need your help too so that we can make the space even better.

We are incredibly grateful to our Parents’ Association, who have been fundraising for this project through several events; and the success of the inaugural Euclid Ball 2024 and the 2025 edition has also raised significant funds.

Transforming our vision into reality relies on significant investment, and we are asking for your help to reach our fundraising target of £205k for this exciting project.

Please consider making a donation using the form above, or contact development@highschoolofdundee.org.uk if you would like to speak to us about the plans and how you can help.

To give an idea of the costs involved:

  • £10 will help us buy 1 hedge plant
  • £110 will provide 1sqm of wet pour

Every donation helps us get closer to our target and is appreciated enormously by the School.
