Armistice Parade 2023

Armistice Parade 2023. In front of main school entrance in courtyard. With all of school attendants participating and showing respects.

The High School of Dundee has marked Remembrance with its traditional Armistice Parade and Service.

In tribute to the fallen, including all those from the High School community who have died in armed conflicts past and present, the School’s Combined Cadet Force and Pipe Band completed a parade in front of the school.

The event, which was watched by pupils, staff, parents, members of the public and guests, was led by CCF Contingent Commander Major Graham Rodger, with Rector Lise Hudson giving a reading from a poem by Sue Gilmurray; ‘Teach Me the Way of Peace’.

A wreath was placed on the School’s War Memorial by Heads of School, Maya McColgan and Alexander Milnes, assisted by Junior Years pupils Jahnaiya Jalo and Patrick Galvin.

A poignant moment in the proceedings saw Pupil Pipe Major Hamish Lowrie play Flowers o’ the Forest before a two-minute silence was observed.

Rector Lise Hudson said, “Our annual Remembrance Parade is always a very moving occasion, allowing us to pause, remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in all conflicts.

“At this time when conflicts are bringing devastating loss, it is vital that we stand together as a community to reflect on the sacrifices made in past and current conflicts. Remembrance places our focus on the vital importance of working together for peace.”

To allow those who couldn’t be present to be part of the occasion, the parade was also streamed live on social media.

During Remembrance week, the School has been selling poppies to raise money for the Scottish Poppy Appeal, and a sale of doughnuts straight after the Parade raised funds for the charity Horseback UK.

To further mark Remembrance, until Sunday the High School is being lit red in the evenings.
