The High School of Dundee Junior Years is celebrating the award of Reading Schools Silver accreditation by the Scottish Book Trust.
The award marks an exciting new chapter in our reading journey, recognising the Junior Years’ commitment to creating an environment where reading is not simply something pupils do, but something they can enjoy, share and make part of everyday life.
To achieve silver accreditation, schools must demonstrate to the award assessors a genuine commitment to reading, promote access to books, and regularly embed reading for pleasure into school activities.
Along with our Junior Years staff and Librarians, our pupil Reading Ambassadors played a central role in the award. From championing books to creating and promoting literary activities, our Ambassadors played a starring role in encouraging their fellow pupils to discover the joy of reading.
Junior Years Award Co-ordinator, L1 teacher Gillian Johnson, said, “This success is the result of a real team effort across Junior Years, with staff, pupils and parents recognising the value of reading and the huge benefits that being an active reader can bring.
“Our Reading Ambassadors are such positive role models – alongside our Book Buddies – who do an amazing job of encouraging our Early Years children to develop a love of books. I am so proud the Junior Years has been awarded Silver status.”
Reading for pleasure can support wellbeing, improve attainment across the curriculum and help develop critical thinking, creativity, empathy and resilience. Every book opens a door to new ideas, new experiences and new worlds – giving pupils the opportunity to explore, imagine and see things from different perspectives.
Achieving Silver accreditation is a wonderful reflection of the work taking place across the Junior Years.
