The High School of Dundee is giving senior pupils the chance to get first-hand insight into a range of industries with a new series of career lectures.
As part of the F5/F6 PSHE programme, a number of guest speakers are coming in to school in the coming weeks to talk to the pupils about their professions, as well as some of the issues which are impacting careers at the moment.
The series recently got under way with an engaging presentation on Surveying and Renewables from Professor Norman McLennan, who is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Director General of the UK/European subsidiary of the Offshore Marine Construction Group, COES.
Professor McLennan spoke to the pupils about the various roles different types of surveyors perform, the variety of work which they undertake and some of the current global challenges which surveyors are helping to find solutions to.
Future lectures in the series will cover games development, artificial intelligence, property development, careers beyond school, and motor racing, ensuring the pupils have the chance to learn more about a real mix of vocations.
Chris Allan, Principal Teacher Pastoral Care and Support, said, “We are incredibly grateful to Professor McLennan for coming in to deliver the first of our PSHE Mini-Lectures this session and I know the pupils found his talk interesting and motivating.
“To learn of the incredible career he has had to date was most insightful, and crucially for our young people to hear, how he got there was most enriching for them.
“We hope that the pupils will find the series inspiring and extremely useful as they make, or begin to think about, important decisions about their own futures.”
