Cadets enjoy action-packed camp

Cadets in action on the camp

The cadets of Korea Platoon recently embarked on an unforgettable three-day expedition to the sun-drenched training grounds of Barry Buddon.

Here’s CCF Contingent Commander, Major Graham Rodger’s account of the expedition:

“For many, this marked their very first experience at a military camp—and they embraced it with enthusiasm and curiosity. Each day was packed with immersive orienteering exercises, designed to help them navigate and adapt to the distinct challenges of the terrain and the disciplined expectations of camp life.

“Throughout the year, these dedicated young cadets had been training with the Scorpion air rifle. After diligently passing their weapon-handling assessments, they were finally given the chance to put their skills to the test. Their performance on the range was admirable, with many demonstrating strong marksmanship fundamentals and achieving notable accuracy.

“However, the experience extended far beyond the firing range. Over the course of the camp, cadets sharpened their drill manoeuvres, moving with precision and unity as a disciplined squad. From sharp about-turns to coordinated wheeling formations, their progress was evident—a clear reflection of their commitment and cohesion.

“Out in the field, cadets were challenged with target indication exercises, honing their communication and tactical awareness. Whether operating in pairs or as part of a fire team, they responded with focus and teamwork. These field exercises culminated in a high-adrenaline finale: a paintball skirmish where cadets, divided into two rival teams, battled it out in a capture-the-flag mission. Despite a few well-earned bruises, spirits remained high, and their competitive energy was infectious.

“But it wasn’t all drills and discipline. There were moments of well-earned rest and relaxation, most notably during their visit to Monifieth Beach. Even in their downtime, the cadets found ways to be industrious. Channelling their energy into damming a small offshoot of the Dichty Burn, they worked together with remarkable ingenuity. Their efforts left their Engineering Science teacher, Mr Vicat Brown, beaming with pride. Just before departing the beach, the cadets opened a small channel, unleashing a torrent of dammed water—a dramatic and satisfying conclusion to their engineering feat.

“As the camp came to a close, each cadet stood a little taller, bolstered by the skills, friendships, and memories forged over the three days. For those completing their Basic Cadet course, it marked the culmination of a year’s hard work, resilience, and growth. Congratulations to all—your dedication, teamwork, and spirit truly embodied the values of military training and camaraderie.”
