A High School of Dundee pupil’s way with numbers earned him an invitation to a prestigious course at the University of Cambridge.
F4 (S4) pupil Haoqi was one of only around 40 youngsters from across the UK to be selected for the UK Maths Trust’s British Maths Olympiad (BMO) Training Camp.
After recording exceptional performances in this year’s preliminary BMO rounds and the Maclaurin Maths Olympiad, Haoqi was asked to join the 7-day event at Churchill College.
There he had the chance to attend lectures on a range of specialist topics like graph theory and prime numbers, socialise with other young mathematicians, and take initial steps towards preparation for selection for the UK team for the International Olympiad – the highest level maths competition for high school students.
It all added up to a brilliant experience for Haoqi. He said, “It was a really enjoyable event. The social aspect was a really big part of the week. I really liked having the chance to gain more experience in some different topics, but probably even more so to make lots of new friends who are also interested in Maths and to work with them on challenges from the lectures.”
