School marks Remembrance with its Armistice Parade

The High School of Dundee has marked Remembrance with its Armistice Parade and Service.

In tribute to the fallen, including all those from the High School community who have died in armed conflicts past and present, the School’s Combined Cadet Force and Pipe Band completed a parade in front of the school.

Watched by pupils, staff, parents, members of the public and guests, the event was led by CCF Contingent Commander Major Graham Rodger, overseeing his final Armistice Parade before he stands down from the role.

Rector Lise Hudson gave a short reflection from Sue Gilmurray’s poem, Teach me the way of Peace and a wreath was placed on the School’s War Memorial by Heads of School, Emma, Arya and Nina assisted by Junior Years pupils Rachel and Archie.

A poignant moment saw Pupil Pipe Major, Harrison, accompanied by Drum Sargeant, Nellie, perform Flowers o’ the Forest before a two-minute silence was observed.

The event was a particularly moving occasion for Rector Lise Hudson, marking her 35th and final Remembrance Parade before she retires at the end of session.

She said, “It has been one of the greatest honours of my career to stand with our pupils, staff and wider High School family, each Armistice Day, remembering together those who gave so much.

“As I take part in this final parade as Rector, I do so with deep humility and gratitude — for the generations of young people who have carried forward the lessons of history, and for a school community that never forgets the importance of remembrance.

“After more than 35 years at the High School of Dundee, I am reminded that our shared history is not just something we teach — it is something we live, together, always.”

During Remembrance week, the School has been selling poppies to raise money for the Scottish Poppy Appeal, and a sale of donuts straight after the Parade also raised funds the charity Horseback UK.

To further mark Remembrance, the school’s main building is currently lit red in the evenings.
