Taster Day

Let your child discover life at our school.

Ready to book a Taster Day for your child?

To book your child’s place, please complete the form below.

Our Admissions Team will be in touch to confirm a date, answer any questions, and send a short follow-up form to gather details about your child’s interests and any specific needs, allowing us to tailor the day for them.

Why Attend?

A Taster Day gives your child the chance to experience a real day at school – joining lessons, taking part in activities, and getting to know potential classmates. It’s a relaxed, enjoyable way to see what school life here is really like before making the move.

Tailored to your child – choose their favourite subjects and areas they want to sample; we’ll pair your child with a friendly buddy with similar interests.

Flexible dates – can be arranged on most school days to fit around family life.

Reassurance – that they’ll be happy, make friends and thrive; chance to compare with your child’s current school environment where, for example, composite classes may be in place.

First-hand experience – see daily life across lessons, clubs and lunch; in Junior Years, experience specialist teaching in music, PE, Computing, Drama and Health & Food Technology.

A great first step – helping them feel confident about their next chapter.

Can form part of an enhanced transition – for anxious children or those who need a little extra support.

What to Expect

Before your child’s Taster Day, we’ll ask you to complete a short form to tell us about their favourite subjects, hobbies, and any learning support or medical needs. This helps us tailor the day so they get the most from their visit.

A typical Taster Day might look like:

A personal welcome at Reception from our Admissions Team.

Meeting their buddies and joining them in class.

Taking part in lessons, activities, and lunchtime clubs.

Enjoying lunch in the Dining Hall (or bringing a packed lunch if preferred).

Wearing either your child’s current school uniform or casual clothes (no jeans), and PE kit if needed.

At the end of the day, parents of Junior pupils can collect from the playground and chat with the class teacher, while Senior pupils can be collected from Reception. Whether it’s a junior taster or a senior taster, there will be lots of opportunities before and after the day to discuss and ask questions.

It’s a relaxed, friendly experience, designed entirely around your child.

How it Differs From a Tour or Open Doors Day

A Tour is a shorter, guided visit for parents. It can be arranged on a date that suits you, and your child is welcome to join. We’ll tailor the tour to focus on the areas that matter most to your family.

Our Open Doors Days take place on a set date. It’s a chance for families to see the school in action, meet staff, and experience the atmosphere of a normal school day at the High School of Dundee.

A Taster Day is designed for your child, giving them the chance to experience school life first-hand. They’ll join classes, take part in activities, and spend the day with pupils who could soon be their classmates.
