Matthew's Story

Matthew, Class of 2017

Matthew

"I am now in my third year studying Medicine at Dundee University and I am loving every minute of it. Yes, it is hard work, but I believe it will be worth it as I will progress into a lifelong career doing something I enjoy and that I’m passionate about.

I do wonder what alternative path I would have taken had I not gained the qualifications that were required for entry onto my university course. I was in a bit of a situation during my final year at school and I genuinely feared that I wasn’t going to achieve my Advanced Highers. As a result, I began to feel very anxious.

The High School of Dundee pulled out all of the stops to ensure that I got back on track with my studies and subsequently onto the career path which I had in mind for my future. From the outset, Dr. Halliday showed a genuine interest in my education when we met whilst I was volunteering at an event. I was taken aback when he expressed a desire to help me, even though we had only just met.

I want to express my gratitude to the High School for allowing me to complete my school education there; to my peers for welcoming me to their school and giving me a sense of belonging; the Foundation for the financial assistance it provided to support my attendance; to the teachers for their dedication and hard work that they put in with me and the subjects I was studying; to Mrs. Hudson for her compassion and empathy; and finally and most importantly to Dr. Halliday for taking the time to speak with me at the event where we first met and subsequently extending an invite to me to attend the High School of Dundee."
