Biology has a particular contribution to make to general education in that it has as its basis the study of living organisms, their interactions and their relationships with the environment to provide pupils with an understanding of themselves and the natural world in which they live. Consequently, the subject provides pupils with a rational basis for consideration of many of the related issues affecting themselves and society giving them an insight into the applications of biology to relevant areas of human activity such as health care, environmental management and technology.
The biology courses from Form 1 through to Advanced Higher in Form 6 provide a framework within which pupils’ understanding of important biological ideas and concepts are progressively developed and contribute to the general education of pupils through their involvement in the processes of scientific study and investigation. Through these processes the department aims to encourage pupils to develop a curiosity and understanding of their environment and their place in the living world, the limits of modern biology and consider questions raised by recent biological advances as well as providing an understanding of the Earth’s resources and the need for responsible use of them. The procedures of scientific inquiry and investigation using practical techniques are developed along with accurate use of scientific language to help pupils expand their understanding and knowledge of biological principles and foster attitudes and abilities such as objectivity and an analytical approach to problems.
The progression of the biology courses from Form 1 and 2 leading to Standard Grade, Higher Biology and Advanced Higher provides a basis for further study and allows an appreciation of the place of biology in related employment opportunities and in leisure pursuits.
