Capital Campaign 2015 - 2020
a place to discover and inspire talent in the arts
a place where experts can nurture the next generation
a place where the transformative power of the arts becomes a living reality for young people
a place that breathes new life into a historic landmark for the whole community
A real Conservatoire for Dundee. Unique in Scotland, it will provide cutting-edge facilities for learning, teaching, performance and presentation in Drama, Music, Dance, Art & Design and also Culinary Arts.
It will be second to none in Scotland and will rival the best in the UK. The award-winning firm of Glasgow architects Page\Park have created a design responsive to these needs, driven by both preservation and regeneration. Our centre of excellence will identify, foster and showcase the talent of young people from all backgrounds across Dundee and beyond - a state of the art hub which brings together (under one roof) a unique environment for developing creativity, innovation and wellbeing through the Arts.
We want to make this wonderful facility available to those who would otherwise not be able to access top quality teaching, coaching and instruction, welcoming performers and practitioners of the highest calibre to lead masterclasses, to direct performances and productions worthy of Scotland's fourth largest city.
"Our vision is to create a stand-alone Dundee Conservatoire of Music, Drama, Dance and Art & Design, the MAC, designed to provide courses and creative opportunities for young people and adults, at weekends, evenings and during the school holidays."
Dr. John Halliday, Rector
Above all, we wish to ensure that young people in Dundee are firmly at the heart of the culture and creative rebirth of the city. They deserve a facility like this. Some courses will be fee-paying, but our vision aims to ensure that some will be free at the point of delivery to ensure the widest possible access. A combination of weekly tuition in the key disciplines, performance, summer schools etc, will be led by specialist professionals enabling students of all ages to flourish, and to give them opportunities to create with others across the various disciplines.
The High School of Dundee is the major investor in this project and the Centre will be used by the school. However, the facility will also be the home of the Meadowside Arts Centre which will be accessible to the wider community.
The Conservatoire will be situated in the very heart of the city, renowned as one of the most student friendly cities in the UK, and currently undergoing a cultural renaissance. The building itself will be in the possession of the High School of Dundee, however, this Conservatoire will be an independent charity, with its own governance and administration.
The MAC trustees will appoint a full-time Director to lead, who will develop the staffing and courses for the centre. A staff team made up of leading professionals will be put in place.
Currently, the school welcomes community groups such as the National Youth Choir of Scotland, Dundee Choral Union, and CLIC Sargent Choir to name but a few. The MAC would add value to these groups' activities and would seek to advance its integration with the schools, colleges, universities, community groups etc both within the city, and further afield.
