Written word inspires pupils' WW1 drama performance
15th November 2018
The importance of the written word during the First World War has provided the inspiration for a poignant original drama production by High School of Dundee pupils.
Last week, as part of the School’s WW1 Armistice Centenary commemorations, a group of 24 Drama pupils from F3 to F6 took to the stage of Trinity Hall to perform a piece which brought to life in powerful fashion the contents of wartime correspondence, poetry and recollections.
Head of Drama, Lindsay Drummond, said, “The inspiration for our piece came from words and the significance of the written word as a means of communication during WW1.
“During my research, the importance of letters, telegrams, poetry and personal recollections became hugely apparent. Providing a moving connection to real people and places makes performing a dramatic production far more meaningful.
“In addition, for us to be able to revisit real events, which happened to people from within our school community, provided a powerful basis for our ideas. So armed with a focus for our planning, the cast were able to experiment and devise pieces for performance. Much of the content is due to their creative ideas, which are filled with the spirit and energy shown by those young soldiers marching to war all those years ago.”
