Pupils and staff lent their voices to a stirring rendition of Vera Lynn’s famous song in order to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.

The musical performance followed on from a number of VE-themed events which took place at HSD in the course of the day.

At 11am, live lessons and school activities stopped for a two-minute silence to honour the service and sacrifice of the wartime generation and to reflect on the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on so many lives across the world.

Throughout the day, a special History department takeover of the PE Instagram account saw pupils and staff recreate Churchill’s iconic V-for-victory salute. You can see the photos on the PE Instagram page (search HSD Sport).

Meanwhile, the Health & Food Technology department challenged pupils to create dishes using a week’s worth of WWII era rations, while in the Junior Years some children learned more about VE Day with the help of everyone’s favourite bear – Paddington!

At 2.55pm Tegan Ellis (F2) joined Trumpeters and buglers up and down the country to perform a moving tribute to those who lost their lives during the war. Tegan played "The Last Post" before pausing for a moment of silence and finishing with the "Reveille", to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Earlier in the week, pupils at the Care Hub at Mayfield had also marked the occasion by creating pieces of artwork.

A new WWII page has been created on the website and the Rector also shared her reflections, which you can read here.
