The School's U16A rugby team did themselves proud at Murrayfield last night as they played their part in an absorbing Scottish Schools Cup Final.

In what was the School's first appearance in the U16 title decider, the boys pushed opponents George Watson's all the way before eventually losing out 15-5.

Cheered on by a large and vocal travelling support, the team came out of the blocks flying, with prop Malachy Keough crossing the line after just three minutes to put the High School 5-0 ahead.

After George Watson's responded to level things up, both sides battled to establish superiority and it wasn't until the second half that the Edinburgh team were able to establish a lead which, in spite of a valiant effort from the High School boys, they were able to hold on to.

Head Coach Christy O'Donnell said, "We're very disappointed with the result but I'm very proud of the boys.

"They gave a very good account of themselves but it was always going to be a tough challenge against very strong opposition.

“We had a fantastic support on the night and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who travelled through to Murrayfield to give the team such wonderful backing. I'd also like to congratulate George Watson's. They were very clinical and were deserved winners on the night."

Rector Dr John Halliday said, "Our boys played with outstanding spirit, courage and determination. “They defended magnificently and created a number of chances, acquitting themselves with great credit. They gave everything and pushed George Watson’s all the way.

“In the end Watson’s power and speed won the day and sincere congratulations to them for winning a match played in a fantastic spirit, summing up all that is good about school sport.”
