Tom sails his way into elite GB squad

A High School of Dundee pupil has the wind in his sails after being selected for an elite GB squad!

Tom Mitchell has earned a place in an elite GB sailing squad

Congratulations to Tom Mitchell who has been called up to the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) British Youth Performance Squad.

Aimed at sailors who demonstrate the potential for world-class performance, the squad programme is designed to enable the very best British sailors to develop their racing skills so they can succeed on the international stage.

Tom, F5, who competes in a Laser Radial, is a cadet member at the Royal Tay Yacht Club and already trains with the RYA Scotland Elite Squad.

He earned his selection for the British Youth Squad after a series of impressive results and performances in recent times. Last year Tom won the opening three races in a fleet of over 200 boats at the Topper World Championships in Holland; was crowned champion in the Scottish Topper Championship and the Scottish Sailingfast Topper Traveller Series; and was first in the GB Topper Class National Series rankings.

Tom said, “I’m absolutely delighted. Competition is so much fiercer at youth events than it was last year at junior level. I’m just so pleased to have progressed quickly and hit top form when it mattered at the qualifiers.

“It’s always been my aim to compete on the highest stage possible and the GBR Youth Squad offers me a fantastic opportunity to achieve this.”

Well done Tom!
