Winter Skills Weekend

A group of hardy HSD pupils have had a fantastic time learning how to enjoy the great outdoors safely during the winter months.

Pupils embrace Winter Skills Weekend

Lochaber in early March was the perfect setting for this year’s Winter Skills weekend, a course which aims to give senior pupils with an interest in hillwalking, safe skills for walking in winter conditions.

On Saturday, 6 pupils from F4-F6 made their way to a number of snow patches on Aonach Mòr to practise skills such as self-arresting with an ice axe and learning to walk with crampons on to allow travel over icy slopes.

And the following day the outdoor enthusiasts had the chance to put what they’d learned into practice when they ascended a munro in Glen Coe.

Outdoor Activities Co-ordinator, Gordon Ross, said, “On both days we were blessed with favourable weather conditions and it was great moment on Sunday when the clouds lifted to reveal the height we had gained and witness the spectacular view in Glen Coe.”
