The Advanced Higher Physics pupils who launched their projectile ‘This Way Up’ into the stratosphere (or maybe just slightly below) at the Scottish heat of the UK Youth Rocketry Challenge, have just received confirmation that they have qualified for the UK final!

Later this month, the six-strong team will therefore compete against the other regional heat winners for the right to represent the UK against teams from France, the US and Japan at the International Finals at the Paris Airshow in June.

Physics teacher David Finch, said, “Congratulations to ‘This Way Up’ who have been rewarded for all their hard work.

“They are aiming to become the first Scottish team ever to win the overall competition, and their success in the qualifier puts them one step closer to Paris!”

Before they take part in the UK final, the team are looking for sponsorship from local companies to help ‘This Way Up’ reach even greater heights! If you are interested in sponsoring the team, they would love to hear from you! Please contact: marketing@highschoolofdundee.org.uk

Well done also on a valiant effort to the other HSD team that took part in the Scottish heat, Power and Vibes. Both HSD teams would like to say a huge thank you to the School’s Old Girls’ Club, who helped to make their participation in the Scottish heat possible.

The UK Youth Rocketry Challenge gives pupils the straight-forward task of launching their rocket to a height of 850 feet, before bringing it back down for a controlled landing within 42-45 seconds. With a fragile payload – a raw egg – intact!
