Ross Mauritzen, F3, was crowned the Tiree Wave Classic Youth Competition champion after turning in an impressive performance in suitably wild and windy conditions off the coast of the inner Hebridean island.

With the contest open to entrants up to the age of 17, Ross’s victory was even more notable as, aged just 14, he had seen off opposition from talented windsurfers from across the country who were up to three years older than him.

Ross, who has been windsurfing since the age of 7, said, “The Tiree Wave Classic is a professional wave sailing competition and there were 30 youths at the event taking part in a wave camp.

“The top seven were allowed to compete in the youth section of the competition and I was really pleased to win as I was the youngest of the seven.

“I also surf which helps with windsurfing in the waves and Tiree is a perfect place for both.”
