Tobi Fasoranti is getting ready to head for Abuja to take part in the final stage of trials for the Nigerian 2023 AfCon squad.

The striker/winger, was one of over 2,000 players who were invited to take part in the initial trials at the end of January.

And after impressing the selectors, he is one of a group of 300 to have been invited back to the nation’s capital for the second stage, from which a 25-man squad for the tournament will be picked.

Tobi, who plays for the School’s team and Monifieth Athletic, as well as training with the St Andrews Utd U20 squad, said, “I was delighted when I found out I’d made it through to the next stage of the trials. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity.

“The standard of the players at the 1st round was crazy, with players who have contracts with Arsenal and Leicester. I really enjoyed it but it was also hard work. It was a three-week long block and we trained three times a day, with just Sunday off.”

Tobi is grateful to his teachers for the extra support they’ve been giving him to help him keep on top of his studies, and with the temperature in Abuja currently an energy-sapping 39C, he’s also been putting in extra work on the fitness front too.

“I’ve been getting up at 6am to run up the Hilltown to make sure I’m in the best shape I can be,” he explained.

The chance to play in the Cup of Nations is spurring the 15-year-old on, and the selected squad will travel straight from Nigeria to the tournament in Algeria.

“It’s going to be tough as all the trialists are trying to force their way into, or replace, a squad of players who have already won through the qualification process. It’s really motivating me to work to get better,” he said.

Good luck Tobi!
