DofE Marches On!

In spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic, HSD pupils have been finding ways to continue their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award activities.

Participants would normally be setting off on exciting expeditions, getting involved with volunteering, taking part in outdoor activities, or learning new skills - and thanks to the DofE programme adapting to the circumstances, the pupils have been able to continue these activities!

During the pandemic, meetings have been taking place on Teams. For their volunteering section, some participants have been helping vulnerable neighbours by shopping for them, playing music to them, or walking their dog. Some pupils have been teaching new skills to siblings or even their parents, whilst others have been looking after the environment by litter picking in their local community.

During the autumn term, participants took part in multiple expeditions in the local area. Dubbed “DofE With a Difference”, these outings weren’t the traditional camping style but were instead day trips that enabled pupils to explore their nearby urban and rural areas.

While keeping a close eye on government guidelines, expeditions for 2021 are being planned and we look forward to seeing our DofE groups enjoying the outdoors together again!
