Brier Candy took the runner-up spot in the HMS Unicorn School Art Competition in which hundreds of pupils from across the city’s nursery, primary and secondary schools took part.

Having been asked to design a mythical sea creature by superimposing different creatures into one, Brier impressed the judges with a mesmerising watercolour of a mermaid superimposed onto a jellyfish.

The annual competition, sponsored by Scotmid, encourages young people to explore their local culture while developing their creative expression, with this year’s entries having been completed under lockdown conditions.

Andrea Douglas, Brier’s art teacher, said, “Brier came up with the creative idea of superimposing a mermaid with a jellyfish using watercolours as the medium. Her piece was creative, innovative and beautifully executed, especially given the challenges of lessons at the time being remote.”

Brier’s artwork was on display on the historic ship over the summer and you can see it, and the other winning artworks, on the Unicorn website: http://www.frigateunicorn.org/visit/schools-resources?view=article&id=154&catid=15

Well done, Brier and everyone else who took part!
