A welcome from our Rector

Dr Halliday version 3"Let your lives speak!"

Welcome!

I am delighted you have found time to look at our website, which I hope you find interesting and informative. The High School of Dundee has been educating the young people of the city of Dundee, Angus, Tayside and Fife for nearly eight centuries, and yet it remains at the forefront of Scottish education in terms of innovation and excellence.

The purpose of the High School is to educate children, to nurture them and lead them from infancy to adulthood. All we do is subordinate to that purpose. The staff here are passionately committed to bringing out the best in each pupil, whatever his or her talents and strengths. Not everyone can achieve the gold medal at an Olympic Games, but everyone can aspire towards his or her own personal Gold Medal.

The staff work hard to foster the qualities of academic rigour and critical thought, but they also strive to spark a strong sense of excitement about and responsibility towards the wider world.  I never cease to be amazed by the creativity, energy and enthusiasm of the pupils here. The integrated curriculum, in which academic subjects sit alongside the many co-curricular activities offered at all levels, is designed to bring out not only the qualities associated with academic study, but also those of leadership, teamwork, communication skills, courage, loyalty, challenge and adventure. It is our strongly held view that all of these qualities are interlinked. Above all, the High School experience, from P1 to S6, is designed to bring fulfilment to the pupils and set them up for life outside and beyond the High School.

I think it was the French philosopher Roland Barthes who said that a classroom is “four walls around the future”. That future starts here, and as our pupils set out on life’s journey I hope above all that they will have the personality, energy and perseverance to live up to George Fox’s exhortation quoted at the top of this page, namely: “Let Your Lives Speak!” That lies at the heart of all we do here at the High School.

But enough of the propaganda! Come and see the school for yourselves. We would be delighted to meet you and show you round. You will receive a warm welcome.
