Home Economics

IMG 6138The Home Economics dept is a modern, forward thinking and nurturing environment for all pupils. The dept has two members of teaching staff; Mrs Gillian Madden, Principal Teacher and Mrs Lesley Ross.  During Session 2010/11, Mrs Susan Farnon will provide maternity cover for Mrs Ross.

Home Economics is concerned with the development of knowledge, skills and capabilities in the contexts of health, materials and resources, personal development and the relationship between the individual and others in the home and wider community. Through practical activities children learn to give and take, consider and respect others and develop values and a sense of responsibility. Pupils are given opportunities and encouragement to participate and achieve, developing children as responsible citizens and effective contributors to society. In promoting equality, inclusion and fairness, pupils develop healthy self esteem and resilience which lays an important foundation for successful learning.

Pupils are challenged and stimulated at all stages; L6 and L7 enjoy short modules learning the basics of food hygiene and preparation skills. With a strong emphasis on practical cookery senior pupils enjoy the subject from S1 to S6 where they return for a refresher “Student Cookery” life skills course in preparation for taking the next step post school. Hospitality, Practical Cookery, courses offer pupils in S3- S5 the opportunity to hone their practical skills demonstrating a range of food preparation techniques as well as obtaining the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene certificate.

Enterprise is encouraged through participation in inter departmental activities and outside initiatives, in addition to Breakfast club and Charities activities. Pupils are encouraged to participate in local and national cookery competitions and a number of pupils have achieved great success,
