The principal aim of the History Department is to encourage an interest in the past and to do so in an enjoyable, structured and progressive manner.
Pupils are encouraged to think and work both independently and imaginatively in order that they may become increasingly responsible for their own learning. Historical skills such as identifying and locating different sources of evidence, interpreting and evaluating evidence, and making informed judgments and devising explanations based on the evidence are progressively developed within the department.
The staff employ a wide variety of teaching methods, including direct teaching, ICT, pair and group work, role-play, structured investigations (with group and individual research), argument and debate, and seminars with senior pupils. This fosters in the pupils an interest in History both in and outside the classroom, which will in turn provide a lifelong source of enjoyment.
