Business Studies is an increasingly important and popular subject. Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development. Our business studies courses are about how organisations work, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate.
The department is made up of Head of Department Anne Louise Laing, assisted by Ruth Crighton. The department aims to produce enthusiastic, well motivated ‘self starter’ business people.
At the High School of Dundee we aim not only to develop the pupils’ insight into the economic world in which they live, but also to equip them with the analytical and practical skills to give them a stake in the economic system. This involves developing a spirit of enterprise through the Young Enterprise scheme allowing pupils to take full control of a business. If their interests lie within the financial markets pupils can enter the Student Investor investment game, the advanced economics students abilities can be put to the test with the Bank of England Interest Rate competition. These activities help develop valuable lifelong experiences in personal development and will lead to the enhancement of a range of general transferable intellectual skills.
Courses are introduced in F3 with Intermediate 2 Economics which continues into F4. Higher Economics is available in F5 with Advanced Higher in F6. Business Management Intermediate 2 level/Crash Higher is offered in F5 with Higher in F6 with an option to do Advanced Higher for successful candidates of Higher in F5. The department has recently introduced Intermediate 2 Accounting for F5 pupils with the option to continue to do Higher Accounting in F6.
The department invites outside speakers for seminars and visits firms in different sectors of the economy to try and bring coursework into the real world as much as possible.
