The High School of Dundee has been selected by The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, to become a member of the Associate Schools and Colleges scheme.
The High School’s Heads of Sciences and Maths will join a UK network of enthusiastic teachers who are interested in sharing their experience and working with the Royal Society in order to help promote excellence in science and mathematics teaching.
The scheme offers schools and teachers the opportunity to have their say and to feed their views into the work of the Royal Society by engaging with its projects and activities. Member schools also have access to additional Royal Society resources such as its ‘Education in the News’ weekly newsletter.
Mrs Sarah Fletcher, Head of Physics at the High School, said: “The Royal Society is renowned worldwide, and by forming partnerships directly with schools it is ideally placed to encourage improvements in science and maths teaching. Pupils at the High School will benefit greatly from our partnership with the Royal Society, and teachers here are looking forward to working with the Society to help improve teaching in science and maths across the UK.”
Professor Dame Athene Donald FRS, Chair of the Royal Society’s Education Committee, said:
“Finding ways to switch young people on to the wonder of science and mathematics is crucial if we are to inspire the inventors, discoverers and innovators of the future. Being able to draw on the first-hand experience of the teachers and schools and colleges working with these young people on a daily basis is absolutely crucial to the Royal Society’s education policy work.”
