Close result in International Mace

April and RachelThe Schools Mace debating tournament run by the English Speaking Union is, at 53 years of age, the oldest in Britain. This year the Scottish Mace was competed for by 80 schools over four rounds of seven-minute long-prep speeches. The winners (pictured left) were Rachael McLellan F6 and April Shepherd F4, who in the final defeated teams from George Heriot’s School, Madras College and Robert Gordon’s College.

International MaceThe pair then went forward to represent Scotland in the International Mace, this year held in the impressive setting of Glasgow University Chapel on 15 May. April and Rachael were judged to have come a close second on that occasion to a team from Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys' School, both of whose members had already spoken in the final of the World Schools Debating Championship in February this year in Doha. Receiving their certificates from Charles Kennedy MP, April and Rachael were proud to have given our friends and rivals from Habs a good run for their money.
