World Book Day celebrated in style

World Book Day 2010Pupils at the High School of Dundee celebrated World Book Day in style today, participating in discussions and quizzes, and listening to specially-recorded readings of works written for the Day.

The highlight of the event was “Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner?”, which saw pupils tackle clues at a “dinner party” in the library.  An online discussion about the Twilight books – a firm favourite with many of the High School pupils - also attracted a lot of interest.

School Librarian Catherine Owens said: “Reading is so important to a child’s development, so we are always trying to find new ways to make books enjoyable, and to encourage reading in pupils of all ages.  World Book Day has given us a fantastic focus to introduce pupils to new authors and new books.  As well as giving keen readers new food for thought, World Book Day helps to demonstrate that books can offer something for everyone.”

In addition to the activities in the Library, the English Department celebrated World Book Day with the help of teachers from both the Junior and Senior Schools. These willing volunteers talked to pupils in Form 2 about their favourite books while they were growing up, and engaged with classes in a wide range of book-related activities.  English teacher Daryl Meechan said: "This was a fun event for all involved, and will hopefully become an annual staple of the school’s World Book Day."

A range of books was on offer as prizes in today’s events, including a box set of the Flanimals series.  Winner of the “Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner?” quiz was Ellie Hawkes (F1), with Calum Hedigan (F2), Rosie Young (F1), Heather Leighton (F1) and Heather Duncan (F1) as runners up.

The picture shows (L-R) F1 pupils Erin Young, Laura Watchman and Kirsty Grant solving clues at the “dinner party”.
