Close-fought battle in Chemistry final

The Tayside & Fife round of the Top of the Bench Chemistry competition culminated in a close-fought battle last night (Tuesday 26 January 2009) at the University of St Andrews.

The High School team of Donald Campbell (F4) Jakob Kroboth and Campbell McLeod (F3) and Alice Burnett (F2) took on teams from Grove Academy, Perth Academy and Madras College.  However, despite leading until the final round, the team was unable to fight off a late challenge from Madras College, who took first place with 68 points.  The High School shared second place with Perth Academy, with both schools on 65 points, with Grove Academy in fourth.

Chemistry teacher Gail Spinks, who has worked with the High School team throughout the competition, said: "It was a very close game and the team did extremely well in the face of some fierce opposition from the other finalists.  It was probably about time we relinquished the trophy, as we have been holding on to it for a number of years, but we’ll be back again next year, to see if we can reclaim it!"
