Party on the Pillars marks 175th anniversary of Dundee landmark

PP fireworks 2The High School of Dundee has marked 175 years of its iconic Main Building with an outstanding display of pupil talents.

Youngsters from L6 (Primary 6) to Form 6, together with members of staff, took to a specially-constructed stage to perform a variety of music and dance numbers in front of the dramatic backdrop of the School’s pillars.

More than 2000 pupils, parents and friends attended the event, which culminated in a spectacular fireworks display above the school.

The event also highlighted a series of banners, commissioned to mark the anniversary, and designed by former pupil Rachael Sinclair, who left the High School last summer to study at Glasgow School of Art.  The evening included a special presentation to Rachael to mark the occasion.

The Main Building was built in 1834 to accommodate three Dundee schools; the Dundee Grammar School, the English School, and Dundee Academy.  The building was funded by public subscription, and was completed over two years at a total cost of £10,000.  This month marks 175 years since the opening of the building.

Those members of the public who originally gave funds to support the building were known as The Subscribers.  The group, now known as The Friends of the High School of Dundee, still exists today, and assists in fundraising activities, as well as providing six members of the School’s Board of Directors.Pictures of this event can be viewed in the gallery.
