We know that many former pupils who received a bursary during their time at school have gone on to have very successful careers.
Over 100 years ago Robert Fleming received a bursary. He built a successful business in Dundee and in 1909 transferred his business to London. Robert started Flemings Bank, a well respected institution which eventually was bought over by the Chase Manhattan Bank.
More recently Robert McKillop, a young film maker, received assistance. Robert said, “I can honestly say that having financial support from the school was invaluable to me, giving me the opportunity of making the most of what I think is the best education on offer in Dundee. The combination of encouraging personal drive and determination and of standing up for what you believe in has been integral to me working and progressing in my chosen field. I would encourage anyone to support the Foundation’s fundraising for bursaries, as it is a Foundation for Success.” Robert has just been selected to study for an MA in Directing Fiction at the prestigious National Film and television school in London, which is quite an accolade.
So, you can see how the provision of bursaries can enable people to make really valuable contributions in their chosen field.
Providing bursaries is a priority because of the current economic situation, as we need to be able to help parents who suffer short term financial difficulties, to enable them to continue their child’s education. We also believe in excellence without elitism and bursaries give us the chance to help children who meet the School's entrance criteria - no matter what their parents' income. We are convinced that it benefits all pupils by maintaining a broad social and cultural mix of children at the School.
We know that many people who donate to our Bursary programme do so because they received financial assistance when they were a pupil at the school and want to “give something back.” Currently we are able to offer support to 15% of the senior school pupils. We believe that with the support of our school community we will be able to achieve our High Hopes aim to provide bursary support for even more pupils. Please look at How You Can Help.
